On Friday, July 25, crews will begin a playground expansion project at Keiler Park located at 2900 Broadway. Crews will begin preparing the site for the installation of new playground equipment that is designed for children ages 2 through 5 and includes a play structure with slides, swings, and a rider along with inclusive play elements.
“Keiler Park is one of our most visited parks with lots of shade and a great place for family and friends to get together,” said Director of Parks & Recreation Amie Clark. “In 2023, the City received grant funds through the Land and Water Conservation Fund to install a new playground. In the past year, the City installed a new playground with swings and improved accessibility with the addition of sidewalks in the park. However, we needed a play space designed for younger children, ages 2 to 5. This new play area that will be installed in August will provide more places for families with young children to gather and enjoy. One of our roles as a Parks & Recreation Department is to provide safe, inclusive spaces for families. I know the community will enjoy this new play area.”
Once the site is prepared, the new playground equipment will tentatively be installed beginning the week of August 4. Following the installation of the playground equipment, a contractor will install a pour-in-place rubber safety surface. Depending upon contractor scheduling, a temporary mulch surface will be installed until the rubber surface can be poured. The entire project is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete, weather permitting.
During the playground project, the existing playground will remain open. However, please watch for work crews and equipment and temporary fencing.
The pour-in-place rubber surface is funded through a Kentucky Dept of Waste Management grant awarded to the City this year.
Earlier this year, accessibility improvements were made to Keiler Park with the addition of sidewalks around the playgrounds and shelters. In 2024, Keiler Park’s playground was replaced with the current, much larger playground that is designed for children ages 5 through 12. That project was funded in part by a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant through the Kentucky Department of Local Government and a matching grant from GameTime.
